Endowed Scholarships

The Endowed Scholarships are monies donated in honor of family members.

Fred Christopher Memorial – The funds for this memorial were raised from memorial donations. Mrs. Viola Christopher donated money toward this fund and asked it to be called the Fred and Viola Christopher Award. Mr. Christopher was from Cincinnati and served as District Governor of Buckeye District 11. This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 1970.

Viola Christopher Memorial – Following the death of Mrs. Christopher, an additional memorial fund was established and named for Viola Christopher upon receiving more money from the family.  At that time the Fred and Viola Christopher Memorial Scholarship was split into the Fred Christopher Memorial and the Viola Christopher Memorial.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2000.

Emanual Stephens Memorial – Upon the death of Emanual Stephens, Weirton, West Virginia, his family and friends donated money to establish a memorial scholarship in his name. His son Dr. Pete Stephens donated oil well stock shares which created a large profit and increased the fund substantially.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 1973.

Angela Stephens Memorial – Angela Stephens died in 1978 and the family asked that since there was ample funds in the Emanual Stephens Memorial fund that a separate scholarship award be given in her name. Thus, the Angela Stephens Memorial Scholarship Award was established.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 1979.

George E. Loucas Memorial – This award was established by the Weirton, West Virginia AHEPA Chapter from memorial donations and chapter donations. George Loucas was Supreme President of AHEPA in 1959-1960.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 1977.

Ellen Lagos Memorial – Ellen had served as Grand President of the Daughters of Penelope and following her death the District Daughters of Penelope established a memorial scholarship in her name. Ellen was from Lima, Ohio.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 1979.

William Glaros Memorial – This fund was established by the Youngstown, Ohio Chapter in honor of William Glaros who served as District Governor of AHEPA.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 1983.

Jeanette Gilveli Corson Nursing Memorial – This award was established by Mr. Corson and the Daughters of Penelope of Dayton, Ohio. Mrs. Corson, a former nurse, was a member of this chapter and upon her death her husband decided to establish this award. This award is to be given to a nursing student. If there are no nursing student applicants, the award can be given to a pre-medical student.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 1987.

Peter N. Manolukas Memorial – This was established by the Youngstown, Ohio Chapter in memory of Peter Manolukas who served as President of their chapter and was a very active volunteer of the Youngstown parish in spite of his thalassemia disease.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 1990.

Mike Giannirakis Memorial – This award was established by members of the Weirton, West Virginia Chapter and the Giannirakis family. Mike served as a member of the Board of Trustees and was President of his chapter and also served as Supreme Governor.  He was also an active member of the church community.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 1984.

Mario Pipinos and Irene Pipinos Memorial – These two funds were established by Mrs. Sophia Pipinos of Weirton, West Virginia in memory of her son and daughter.  These Scholarships were presented starting in June, 1998.

Daughters of Penelope Kellie Statheros Re-Entry – This fund was established by the District Daughters of Penelope in 1987 and is to be awarded to a member of the Daughters of Penelope who chooses to re-enter college for training to enter the work force. If there is no application the award is not given.

Costa Iacovou Memorial – This fund was established from the estate of Costa Iacovou.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2000.

James Callinicos and Maria Callinicos Memorial – These two awards were established by the Springfield Chapter. These two individuals were members of the Springfield parish.  These Scholarships were presented starting in June, 2000.

Past Grand Presidents Memorial – This memorial was initiated at a District Convention and donations were made under the old statute of $5,000 for a $500 scholarship award. After many long years of contribution the Scholarship Foundation voted to Grandfather this award to $1,000 in 2004.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2002.

Liberty Chapter 127/ Christine Giovanes Memorial – This award was established by the Liberty Chapter 127 of Cincinnati in memory of Christine Giovanes, who donated the money to the chapter to use however they decided. The Chapter stipulated that this scholarship be awarded to a Cincinnati area scholarship applicant. If there are no applicants from Cincinnati, it can be awarded at the discretion of the trustees.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2004.

Louis and Deno Zavakos Memorial – Money for this award was donated by Mrs. Julia Zavakos in memory of her husband and son.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2003.

Kenneth W. Fletcher Memorial – Money for this fund was donated by Kenneth W. Fletcher’s widow, Debbie Fletcher.  It was stipulated that this scholarship is only to be given to a student who has a financial need.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2004.

Sonia Manios Memorial – Money for this award was donated by Sonia’s husband, Mike, and the Manios family in her honor.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 1995.

Harry T. Lagos & Eugenia P. Lagos Memorial – This award was established by Thomas H. Lagos in memory of his father and mother on January 14, 2006. The stipulation on this award is to only be awarded to an active Sons of Pericles in an active Sons of Pericles Chapter, and if there is no active Sons of Pericles awardees from an active Sons of Pericles Chapter, then it should go to an active Maids of Athena from an active Maids of Athena Chapter.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2006.

Samuel W. Kiriazis Scholarship — This award was established at the June, 2006 AHEPA Buckeye District Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the Awards Luncheon, to honor Samuel W. Kiriazis by the AHEPA 480 Foundation. There were no stipulations for giving this award.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2006.

Mark Zigoris & Irene Zigoris Scholarship – This award was established in June, 2006 by Mark and Irene Zigoris. There were no stipulations for giving this award.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2006.

Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, Springfield, Ohio – This award was established in 2006, with the stipulation that the awardees must be studying to be a priest.

Anestis & Janeen Condorodis Scholarship – This award was established in June, 2007 by Anestis and Janeen Condorodis, with the stipulation that it be awarded to a Cincinnati, Ohio scholarship applicant. In the event that there are no eligible recipients from Cincinnati the scholarship can be awarded to a student at the discretion of the Trustees.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2007.

Youngstown Chapter Lincoln Foundation PSP Cleo Zambetis Scholarship – This award was established on September 22, 2007 by the Lincoln Foundation set up by the AHEPA #89 Youngstown Chapter. The Foundation requested the scholarship be named in honor of Past Supreme President Cleo N. Zambetis.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2007.

Janice Glaros Pantel – This award was established on April 24, 2008 by DOP Chapter donations, friends and completed by Nicholas J. Pantel, Janice’s husband, with the stipulation that this be awarded to a female scholarship recipient from the Youngstown, Ohio area.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2008.

DOP Polydama #111 Scholarship – This award was established on January 12, 2008 by the Daughters of Penelope Polydarna #111 Chapter out of Dayton, Ohio, with stipulations that it be awarded to a Dayton, Ohio scholarship recipient with financial need.  In the event that there are no eligible recipients from the Dayton area the scholarship can be awarded to a student at the discretion of the Trustees.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2010.

Anne Lake Memorial – This award was established in 2010, willed to the foundation from Anne Lake’s estate.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2010.

Liberty #127 Cincinnati – This award was established in 2010, by the Cincinnati chapter.  The Chapter stipulated that this scholarship be awarded to a Cincinnati area scholarship applicant. If there are no applicants from Cincinnati, it can be awarded at the discretion of the trustees.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2010.

Dilboy/Maniatis #129 Louisville – This award was established in 2010, by the Louisville chapter.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2010.

Anthony J. Topougis Memorial – This award was established in 2010 by the donations from friends and family of Anthony J. Topougis.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2010.

Julia & Louis Zavakos Memorial – Monies for this fund were donated by the children and grandchildren in memory of their parents and grandparents so that a $1,250.00 scholarship will be given each year to a student from Dayton, OH or the surrounding communities.  In the event that there are no eligible recipients from the Dayton area the scholarship can be awarded to a student at the discretion of the Trustees.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2013.

The Dayton AHEPA Philanthropic Foundation Scholarship – Monies for this funds were given by this Foundation to award a $1,250.00 scholarship to a Sons of Pericles or Maids of Athena student from the Dayton area.  In the event that there are no eligible recipients from the Dayton area the scholarship can be awarded to a student at the discretion of the Trustees.  This Scholarship was presented starting in June, 2013.

Clayton Miller Memorial – The monies for this scholarship were given by Clayton Miller’s family in his memory to award a $1,250.00 scholarship.  This scholarship was presented starting in 2015.

DOP Calypso #13 Scholarship – Monies for this scholarship were given by Daughters of Penelope Cincinnati Chapter Calypso #13 to award a $1,250.00 scholarship to children of Calypso #13 chapter.  If no child of a Calypso member is eligible the scholarship can be awarded to a child of the AHEPA Cincinnati Liberty #127.  In the case that no child of Liberty #13 is eligible, the scholarship will not be awarded that year.  This scholarship was presented starting in 2017.
